A coup was undergoing in the morning of 7 December 2025 in Benin.
Gunshots were reported in Camp Guézo by the French embassy around 9am, close to the Presidential Palace. Soldiers led by Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal TIGRI then announced on national TV that President Talon was dismissed.
Although the situation was initially confused, reports emerged that President TALON was safe. The Interior Minister then announced around noon, in the same studio of Benin’s national TV, that the coup has been thwarted.
A security sweep is still underway to find hostile elements, with armored vehicles having been reported around the presidential palace.
France, the US, Japan, Italy, Bulgaria, Norway, the UK, and Denmark have sent alerts to their citizens, advising to either avoid crowds, shelter in place, or avoid all travel to the area.
Update (5PM) Germany and Sweden have also sent alerts about the coup attempt.
